My apologies for the grief they have had to endure and the tortuous agony they have had to endure through a week's worth of uncertainty of not knowing whether their loved ones were alive or dead, or for the perceptions of indifference or senseless foot-dragging on the part of the Russian government for not accepting aid more promptly. Whether or not this could have done anything to have changed the outcome of this tragedy is debateable, but nonetheless a sadly moot point now. All I can ask or hope for is that each family that sacrificed a son, husband, father or brother in the name of serving their country realizes the priceless contribution they have made to the citizens of the world, and the admiration they have posthumously for loving their country enough to die for it. |

My uncle was an 18 year old FFC aboard the WWII submarine the Escolar, she was full of young men. They were all lost at sea October 1944, their first mission out, full of young men filled with hope and passion for freedom. The pain of that moment has been passed down in our family, never to be forgotten. When we read his letters, see his pictures, his uniform, it all goes to the heart. The pain that my grandparents felt, and the loss that has stayed with his baby brother, my dad, all these years. When we saw what happened to this Russian crew, that sick feeling hit us, and our thoughts were immediately with this crew and their families, from that moment on they've been in our thoughts and prayers. God bless them all as they continue in Silent Service. God be with all submariners, as well as ALL those who serve their country. I read and listen to everything that even has to do even remotely with submarines. My heart wrenched into itself the day of 12 August 2000. I sadly felt by Tuesday that indeed the brave men of the Kursk had been called to the Eternal Patrol. They were called by men before them who saw that it was their time to toll the bell one last time. You 118 men were not "Russian Submariners" to me or to ANY of the submarine community. You were and always will be A Submariner, out of reach by creed, race, religion, country or political belief bound to one another by the murky waters you patrol to protect your children, families and countries. God will safely deliver you in that I have no doubt. You have proven yourselves most honorable in a world where sometimes honor doesn't exist. May our countries learn something from this. Even the smallest lesson. May your proud death's be justified with some lesson learned. I will think of the Kursk often over the next few weeks. I will be a little less cheerful about the day. I will vist our Submarine Museum and say a quiet prayer for you, your families and for your homeland. Goodnight and know that your watch will not go unforgotten by one person.
