Comments: What makes me really sad is you gave your life defending your country from a country that you need not defend yourself from. We ride our boats to protect FREEDOM. What did you give your life for? It is so hard for us to understand the mind set that propaganda and mis-guidance can inflict to make us your enemy. The one thing that we all know, as humans and as brothers, is the universal language, LOVE. We understand the love you had for your families and the love they had for you. My heart breaks for your families as if yours were my own.

Comments: With a heavy heart, I followed the tragedy of the sinking of the Kursk. Daily I prayed that the fallen sailors would find peace and the families left behind will find comfort in this time of loss. I cannot relate in words, the sorrow I feel. Words will not bring back these brave souls nor will they stop the mourning of thier loved ones. But it is with some hope that those who have been left behind will know that they do not mourn alone. I did not know any of the crew in life, but I feel the loss in thier death. May God watch over these submariners and protect them as they protected thier nation. Good bye brave men, though you may have left us behind, your memories will forever be a part of us. God Bless

Comments: My brother was a submariner; my brother-in-law still is. The women whose brothers went down on the Kursk could have been me - my family knows what it is to never be sure if our boys are coming home again. My heart goes out to the families of the boys who didn't.

Comments: Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awakend in the mornings hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.

I pray that someday we no longer will need giant ships of steel ready for war. Today, somehow, I think mankind is a small step closer to peace on earth. Prayers for you are in our hearts. -- Ed Hartwell, U. S. Navy Journalist First Class (Retired)

Comments: For all men who wear Dolphins. Of what ever nation, creed or colour. At sea, we have but one true Enemy - the unrelenting deep. Hour after hour we patrol the deep. Every so often glancing up at the main access hatch and thinking of what lies just 2 inches away. Ours is a lonely life. We come home with tales we cannot tell, with Pride that cannot be matched. When asked what I was in Her Majasties Armed Forces. I was a Submariner first - last and Always.

Comments: Dear God, take these men who have served their homeland into your presence. Bless their families with your peace. Give them rest from their sorrow, remind them of your gentle presence. I salute my brother submariners for their sacrifice. Please, oh God, help us to remember those of us who go to the sea in ships in defense of our homeland. Grant us that, someday, we will all be brothers serving you and protecting the peace you have given us.

Comments: As professionals, I feel it my duty to pay respect to any Submariner who met the call to "Rest your Oars" as a result of an event of this nature. My submarine days go back to Desiels of the 1944-58 era, so I am unfamiliar with the complexities of the boats today. However I am familiar with the pressure changes as sea water rushes into a confined space and I can feel how it must have been when all was beyond control. While I am reasonably certain that if the very best rescue devices were quickly in place, the end result would have been UNchanged. It is just a good feeling to know that such capabilities are available and can make a "good gesture" attempt by any and all dedicated underwater rescue teams. Dick Sprince

It was an unforgettable experience during which our hearts melded with some awesome human beings whose hardships, whose suffering, left us longing and yearning on behalf of our Russian brethren. I am not a soldier. But I do know how it feels to be sinking in helplessness without an advocate, drowning in hopelessness, without a miracle. Judging by the sincerity and compassion of your letter of condolence, you are a kinsman; therefore, I commend you for having reached out in a right spirit and beseech you to use your expertise and leverage to continue what you have begun: piercing an encroaching darkness that gains momentum ABOVE sea level... Respectfully, Tamerlane

I am also more than a little upset to hear that the government did not act sooner than they did. If they had, some of those men might very well be alive today. I just wanted to say how much i grieve for the dead and feel for their families. My whole family was so very upset to see this on the television. I hope you manage to stand tall again one day and be proud of your brave young men who gave their lives to defend their country.

Comments: Our son is a US Navy Submariner. Our hearts went out to all the families of those lost on the Kursk. My husband has a weekly Christian radio program that is broadcast via the Internet and he has read the submariners' prayer on several occasions for the crew of the Kursk. The rows and rows of candle flames on the memorial website moved me to tears. Our prayers continue for all of the families affected by this terrible loss.

Comments: I served time onboard the USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN-624) from 1988 until she was decommishioned in 1994. I feel pride and sorrow for these men who unexpectedly lost their lifes to the waters of the deep. I know the fear was always in the back of my mind during our patrols. As to the people who make a stink of them being Russians... I say poppycock. We are all human beings, serving our countries as best we can even if we don't always agree with all of it's decisions. My prayers are extended to the men and families of the Kursk.

Comments: As President of the USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN-624) Reunion Association, I feel I can speak for the more than 2421 Sailors that have served under the sea on this submarine. We all know the rigors of life at sea on submarines and the possible dangers involved, but that came as second nature to those who choose that life. No one ever expects to die or not return from Patrol but sometimes unforseen incidents occur which affects us all. We need to stop and reflect and also remember that War is different from Peacetime. There is a brotherhood amongst ALL SUBMARINERS no matter what Nation they represent. I am very sorry for the individual who represented himself only as Xxxxxx on message #118. In this country, freedom of speech is allowed. Sometimes stupidity rules over common sense. May we all find comfort that those who are now on "Eternal Patrol" may rest in peace knowing they died doing what they knew best. Our prayers go out to all their families and friends.

However, as an American, I admire the tenacity of the Russian people. They are not "soft" as many of my fellow countrymen have become. Hang in there! Democracy (and to some degree, socialism)and your country are worth the fight. Stand by your navy and what it stands for (your pride). Maintain your will for freedom because your loved ones did not die in vain. They are an example of bravery of the highest kind and have become not only national heroes but world heroes. Comments: This tragedy united many Russians with others around the world in demanding that political leaders serve the needs of their people first, and their own egos last. As a Catholic priest, I was especially moved to read the closing lines of several letters of mothers to their sons: "Say your prayers . . . Don't worry; have faith in God . . .We are praying for you . . ." And it was touching to see TV images of families going to their churches to light candles before the ancient icons, commending their sons, brothers, and husbands to God's care. It was predicted at Fatima in 1917: "If people pray, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace in the world." The darkness which the crew of the Kursk encountered may, in fact, become another opening for the true Light in Russia. May God bless the souls of the departed with everlasting peace and joy.

Comments: Former enemies, yes. Future enemies, possibly. But still brothers in the silent fraternity of submarines. They gave their lives doing the same job of submariners worldwide - a job few understand and fewer still dare to do. Men of the Kursk - may your Eternal Patrol be peaceful. God bless those left behind; our prayers are with you.

Comments: With regrets there are among us that may be asked their sacrifice their lives in the service of their nation, the crew of the Kursk paid that price. As a soldier, I am disheartened at the loss of good men, in such a manner which they died. May God rest their souls and comfort their families in this time of need. It is my wish to place a poem in their honor. PLEASE goto my web site at the end of two weeks. Thanks in advance

Comments: Although I feel for the families of the men killed aboard the Kursk sub, I find it offensive that all of America is mouning the loss of a submarine that was specially designed and built for sinking American ships. The cause of the disaster was a wepons malfunction while testing a 100-RU Veder missle during the simulated destruction of a U S submarine. I am sorry if some people do not choose to believe these facts, but they are just that, facts!

Comments: It was with much sorrow that I watched the recent tragedy of the Kursk on televison. As a retired Canadian submariner who spent fifteen of my young years serving beneath the waves I can relate very closely to the brave crew of this submarine. My heart and prayers go out to all those left behind by this terrible tradegy. May our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be with them in these days of great grief. May those of us in the submarine community around the world reach out to help the families of the Kursk ship's company. Only by the Grace of God are many of us still alive to share in this time of suffering.

Comments: Having spent a large portion of my life on submarines, I find it very difficult to express how I feel about the loss of the Kursk. It does not matter to which nation you belong, if you are a submariner you are my brother. Although I knew none of the crewmen I take the loss personally- it is a very hollow feeling. To the people of Russia- Hold your heads high. Losing these brave men during times of peace is a shameful tradgedy. Yet the men who place themselves in harms way for your survival are extraordinary. I suspect that Russia is filled with these men. Never let their memory fade. Fair winds.......
