Comments: With all the different countries on this Earth, with all it's individual cultures, beliefs, loves, passions, and conflicts there are few things that can tie people together in this modern day. There is one small society of people that share a bond stronger than politics, more steadfast than personal prejudices; that bond is that of a submariner. No matter what part of the world you live, or what country you protect, a submariner will honor a submariner. I am a submariner in the United States Navy serving at Submarine Squadron 20 and I am a husband, a son, and a brother. To the crew of the submarine Kursk who will uphold the honor of their country by joing long lost shipmates beneath the waves, I salute you; to the families of this crew, you will forever be in the prayers of my family even as I go and venture into the deep. This has been a trajedy for the people of The Russian Republic. Maybe it will help to further open the relations between our two countries. The submarine Kursk, on eternal patrol, thank you for your sacrifice. You will forever be on the minds of those of us who call ourselves submariners, those of us who lay our lives on the line, doing this un-natural and dangerous thing, for the beliefs of our countries. You will not be forgotten. Farewell Shipmates

Comments: I spent 22 years in the US Navy. I have a good many friends who are submariners, however I am not. I respect all men who volunteer and or serve on those vessels. I regret to hear of any person losing their life in such an incident as the Kursk. I salute the souls of those poor sailors. A tragedy at sea for a sailor is most disheartening, especially for the family. Life goes on without them, but their time on earth was well spent and I am sure they are now in a better place.

In our daily lives we find and argue our differences; but in death we put aside the petty disagreements to find that pain and hope is the same for us all. Comments: I was in sheer suspense and pain from the moment I first heard of this unfolding tragedy. I think it was on mind during my every waking moment. To this moment it is hard for me & my family to fathom the reality & magnitude of this awful tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of the sailors and to all the Russian people who have been forever changed by this event. It is my hope that if anything could be gained from such unimaginable human loss it would be that the Russian people (and all people) will understand that war & hatred & killing of people from other countries & societies is wrong and we should not blindly follow the propaganda of our governments. Further, it would be that the Russian people would know that the American people, and many people of all nationalities and flags, mourn this loss as if it were our own. In fact, it is our own - we are all human beings on the same earth! God Bless! You are still in our thoughts and prayers.

Comments: A VERSE FOR THE FAMILIES AND CREW OF THE KURSK How can it be, this tragedy? Taking one hundred and eighteen lives From their mothers, fathers, children, wives. And when we weep, we curse the deep, For the Kursk and its faithful crew. Under the sea, late, and overdue. One hundred and eighteen sailors waiting Below, for their fate in a living hell, A double explosion and one could tell From tapping on its hull so loud, so dull. All hope for rescue had drained away Whilst family, friends, and nations did pray. Then silence fell from the stricken shell Life to a man was gone, their time impaled As attempts to release them failed For the damage was bad, the world was sad It was not their fault that help came too late, To save the crew from that dreadful fate. And now we must wait and wait and wait, For the Russian submariners so brave To be raised from the depths of their watery grave Then laid with respect, so in time we'll reflect How the men of the Kursk drew nations together With hopes of international harmony forever. © 2000 Dave Feakes, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.

Comments: Great site. I was very moved by the memorial to the crew (and families) of KURSK. We participated in a 100th Anniversary memorial service in San Francisco last weekend that included KURSK in the tolling of the bell for lost boats. We (my wife Donna and I) thought it most appropriate and it was very moving. Gil - Life Member USSVI, USS Razorback, USS Pickerel, USS John Marshall

There is no doubt in my mind that they were among the finest that your country had to offer. I salute them. I only hope that your government has learned a valuable lesson from this tragic event and takes positive steps to ensure safer submarine operations in the future. God bless.

Comments: A key flight crew member of the ill fated "Challenger" Shuttle was interviewed prior to his final mission. He spoke of the inevitability of disaster of a future shuttle mission due to the sophistication and complexity of a spacecraft containing millions of parts functioning flawlessly in a hostile environment. Yet he trained for and sought with every fiber of his being to be a member of the Challenger crew. Similarly, all the families and crews of today's submarines subconsciously know, understand, and (of their own volition)accept the risks . This site is a fitting tribute to all choose a career path which places their individual fears subservient to a mission of maintaining international peace. Let us pay them homage!

Comments: : There are many stories, poems and ballads written about the Sailor who goes under the water in service to their country. It doesn't matter that the countries may not be the same - there is most certainly a connection felt by all fellow submariners. It is absolutely true during a tragedy such as the loss of the Kursk that all submariners feel the pain as it ripples across their heart strings. But it woud be my guess also, that fallen submariners end up together enjoying each others company without the shadow of governments and politics. As a fellow submariner, my heart is heavy with the knowledge of what those terrible last moments must have brought to those Sailors on the Kursk. I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those brave men who died on their submarine...

Oh hear us when we cry to Thee for those in peril on the sea. Bless those who serve beneath the deep, Through lonely hours their vigil keep. May peach their mission ever be, Protect each one we ask of Thee. Comments: Two events this year have brought back vivid memories of submarine service (1968-1971). First, reading the non-fiction accounts in "Blind Man's Bluff: the Untold Stories of Sub Espionage during the Cold War" brought me an emotional closure to a near-fatal incident involving my boat USS Tautog (SSN-639). For 30 years two crews carried the unnecessary burden of thinking they had caused the deaths of each other. Second, while I monitored news of the Kursk sinking I recalled memories of the realities and fears all submariners face. Is my equipment up to the task? Is it reliable enough that I should expect to return to homeport when the mission is over? What will they tell my family if I should not return? Are the possible results of this mission worth the risk of the crew's lives? [preliminary reports indicate the Kursk's torpedos were not up to the task] My greatest hope is that this tragic loss leads to a vast improvement in downed submarine rescue technology in each nation's submarine community. Nations that engage in sub operations owe it to all concerned, its the right thing to do! God bless the crew of the Kursk, their families and loved ones

Comments: I feel sorry that nothing could be done on time to save these young men. My sympathies go out to their families and friends and to whom ever held them dear. I have two sons of my own and I can really feel for the mothers and fathrs of these young men that died without a hope in the world of surviving this awful tragedy. I have always believed that people as young as these men died for a good reason and as painful as that is to except it is our universal God that controls our destiny. So please dear ones be strong and happy that your child, husband, brother, fiance, cousin, etc. Has found a better place than this world we live in and we should believe that they left early to prepare for the new world for our arrival, soon! Take comfort in knowing that God is with us always.
