To paraphrase an American father whose son was lost at war. "This is a very sad thing that these men perish before their time...but it's not a tragedy. How could it be a tragedy when a person gives their life dutifully serving to protect his fellow soldiers, his family, his country? Giving your life in such a selfless way is a priceless, pure sacrifice." I'm sure this thought is little comfort now...but maybe it will be more valuable as time goes by. |

The prayer goes, "Now I lay you down to sleep, I pray the lord will your soul to keep, if you die before you wake I pray the lord your soal to keep." Its a prayer most of us learn as children before we grow up and extend our prayers to include our friends, loved ones and others that we feel need our prayers. And for the last week my children and I have also included in our nightly prayers the crew of the Kursk. At the beginning, I prayed they would find survivors, now I pray that their souls find peace and happiness in heaven. I also pray for those left behind. I have never had to endure the pain of losing a love one prematurely, I can only imagine what the family's of the crew of Kursk are going through. It brings home just how fragile live is. My heart goes out to those left behind and I'll continue to pray for the mother's, father's, wife's and childen who lost their loved ones on the Kursk. |

I have had friends who wore the Dolphin for the United States Navy and I came to learn their fears and worries as they sailed below as they learned mine in the sky. There are so many times that the death of someone has no boundaries it does not recognize boundaries or governments nor does it care that those who have passed on were newlywed,a father ,a grandfather or still full of young life. The loss of so many lives in such a precarius position is tragic as these fine men had no intentions except to carry out their assignments and serve and eventually return home to their families. My prayers go out to each member of their families and I salute every one of them for proudly having given their best to the very end. God bless each of you and your family members. Keath A Rhymer |

The pain the families will endure for the remainder of their lives is beyond comprehension for the rest of the world. And while there is nothing possible to lessen the heartache they will experience, I hope that the outpouring of offers of help and sympathy from around the world will be remembered not only the survivors, but all the people of the Russian Federation in years to come. How sad it is that an event such as the loss of 118 brave men would produce such a massive response of shared grief by people everywhere. Perhaps if we all could remember the Kursk accident and how it affected us, then such weapons of war might someday becomoe obsolete and mothers might never fear losing sons to the sea. |

Unseen, unnoticed and unknown by most of our countrymen whom we were there to protect and defend. Once enemies, now only wary observers and today only brothers…. Only we, as few others can even begin to comprehend, know the full measure and extent of your sacrifice to your country as you went about your job. We, know the isolation and loneliness you endured so that others might enjoy their families in peace. We, know the years of children’s lives lost and lovers arms unfilled. We, know the unforgiving hostility of the environment in which you lived, equaled only by those who go into space, not for days or weeks but months on end. We, know the knowledge you carried with you every moment tucked neatly in a box in the corner of your mind, that you walked in the belly of a beast. A capricious beast who merely tolerated your presence. One that, at any moment, might decide to allow the most insignificant part of itself to malfunction and devour you, as it has done. We, understand the unspoken fears and thoughts you carried with you of just such an eventuality. We, know the close camaraderie and bonding with your fellow shipmates, each there for the other – each dependent on the other to be the very best they could be, as you faced the dark, cold, silent crushing depths together. Few men ever have the privilege of knowing the spirit of that bonding. From that brotherhood shared, through the long days of not knowing, we were with you perhaps not in body but certainly in mind and spirit. So it is on this day with thankfulness in the final knowledge, or at least the prayer, that all of you mercifully never even had the time to even realize your fate much less experience it, we accept the finality of your passing. There but for the grace of God walk any of us, so we stand in unison and salute you … our fallen brothers. Now our thoughts and feelings turn to those who loved you and remain in this world without you. Our prayers ask to give them strength and solace for the pain and grief they are enduring. We hope the lessons to be learned from your death and ultimate sacrifice will be seized upon, by all nations and especially by yours, and be taken to heart by those who can correct the causes and can prevent it from happening again so that your deaths will not be in vain and may someday keep other brothers from the same fate. Nevertheless, with honor and respect we shall keep your memory alive, as we do for our own that are Forever On Patrol…….. Raymond (Rusty) W. Trent, Jr. MM2 (SS) U.S.S. Thomas A. Edison SSBN 610 (G) |

I am a former US Army Captain and a graduate of West Point, the United States Military Academy. Historically, our countries were enemies until only recently. I truly believe those days are long gone, and an era of friendship can become the future for our two great countries. More importantly, soldiers and sailors belong to a fraternity even larger than their own nations: they belong to, as we call it in America, the Profession of Arms. As such, this makes us brothers indeed. My heart is so saddened by this naval tragedy. I feel that it is truly your loss...and ours, as well. So, please accept this message of sympathy from an old American soldier in Houston...and also accept this message of friendship, as well. If you...or any of your friends...ever happen to be so fortunate as to visit Texas some day, please let me know. My friends and I will welcome you all gladly into our Texas community. We will always think of your sons in a thoughtful way and always with a prayer on our lips. They will always be on eternal patrol.I hope your government will do something special for the memory of your loved ones like the US has done for their men on eternal patrol. There is a memorial with all the names of the Subs and their crew that were lost or missing in Honolulu. There is also a Small church on base that has mass every day and they start their prayer service with a prayer for the sailors on eternal patrol. It is a very touching thing to attend. I would like you to know your children and Husbands would be remembered in such a special way. This was a prayer that even as we prayed it for our Russia we prayed it for all the nations. I am the wife of a submariner and have often had the terrible thoughts while my husband patrolled under those dark silent waters. Now, my heart screams silently yet earnestly for those who are living this tragedy. You are not alone, neither are your loved ones who have made the ultimate sacifice. As we live on in this ever-changing world of ours, let us not forget the honor, pride, and sacrifices which all persons who have been called to serve their country do and will continue to do. For they will carry on the memory of your loved ones with them everyday; as will, those of us who love them. I believe serving ones country is a calling, not a choice. It is born into our faithful sons, daughters, and loved ones. They, who put their lives on the brink of death with each patrol or mission, who leave their families and loved ones willingly, and who put their country's mission before their own, I commend every one of you. Past, present, and future. Especailly those who have perished in trying to "Keep The Peace". Now it is time to wake up and not let our dedicated survivors suffer and perish in this fashion again! My heart and prayers are with all the mourners, myself included. |

May some measure of comfort be brought to the families of the men lost in this tragedy as they mourn for their loved ones. |

To the mothers and fathers, the wives and children, and the friends and loved ones, my deepest sorrow is for you. These men have gone to a better place and are now in the loving hands of our Father. The ones left behind are the ones who suffer from the sensless loss, which the government that sent them their will never know. My prayer is for your comfort and peace knowing that death is not an ending, though it may feel that way, but a beginning of a new and wonderful journey for those you loved. Nothing will erase the pain. But God can make it bearable. God's Blessings to all who have felt the pain of this loss. |
